How Taking Responsibility Leads To Success

Accepting responsibility is critical for your success because it enables you to move past your errors without feeling burdened by remorse, guilt, or embarrassment. It also strengthens your character as you grow more adept at acknowledging shortcomings and taking appropriate action to make up for them.  In short, taking responsibility is the bridge that takes you from where you are now to where you want to go with your life.

When you are taking responsibility for your actions, you understand that the choices you make are your own and that you need to be able to live with them. It’s not about blaming others or expecting others to take care of you; it’s about taking charge of your life and working hard toward your goals so that you can reap the rewards of success as you make them happen. Being responsible means, you are following through on promises, being honest about your abilities and limitations, and taking control of the situation when needed in order to avoid unnecessary mistakes and pitfalls.

Define success for yourself

Success is different for everyone. Success in life can mean living with integrity and being happy with who you are. It could be about taking responsibility for your actions and not blaming others or circumstances. Success could also be about finding balance in life, a healthy work-life balance that allows you to enjoy your time away from the job. You might think that it is the feeling of contentment when you know you are living life on your own terms.

The important thing is to start out with a clear understanding of what success is for you.

It's not too late to take responsibility for your happiness and success, even as we don't always get what we want in life.  Write down what success means for you.  Do this knowing that no one else can do this for you and if you don’t do it, then it will never be done.

Be Specific and Set Realistic goals

It is important to set specific and realistic goals. Goals should be measurable so that you know whether you are succeeding or not. Goals should also be achievable with the knowledge that you have at the time of setting your goal. Another consideration when setting goals is how much time it will take to complete them. Try to set goals that are ambitious and a little out of your comfort zone.  Lastly, it’s important to break down goals into smaller steps in order to increase your chances of success by breaking a large goal into more manageable pieces.

You are starting to get a roadmap with this process.  You might have started this with an idea or feeling that you needed to do something more.  Now you can picture what you want to strive for, and you have specific, actionable goals on how to get there.  Taking responsibility for making it happen is a choice, your choice.  No one else can do this for you and no one is going to save you if you fail.

Take responsibility for your actions

Taking responsibility, ultimately, is taking action for your own life. The more responsibility you take on and the more decisions you make for yourself, the better off you will be in the long run. There are so many resources out there that can help guide you in how to be responsible, but it all starts with YOU! The only way to learn is by making mistakes; don't let fear of what others may think hold you back from living an authentic and fulfilling life.

Being accountable is good.  When you are accountable, you are accepting of the outcome, good or bad.  However, being responsible is a different mindset.  A deeper mindset.  You are the person that is going to make it happen.  Because you are responsible for making positive progress in your life.

Be persistent and create daily habits

One of the best ways to take responsibility for your life is with persistence and creating positive daily habits. For example, when you wake up in the morning, you have a choice. You can either get out of bed, look outside your window and feel overwhelmed by everything that needs to be done or you can say this will be a good day and head into the shower feeling optimistic about what today has in store. It all comes down to how we choose to think about our days, even if they are stressful. When we make a positive movement every day it adds up!  Responsibility empowers your life and when you focus on making small daily improvements that become habits, you build on those positive outcomes, those goals you have that will help you reach the success you have imagined and are making real.

What are some positive daily habits you could create?

·       Getting solid, uninterrupted sleep

·       Eat healthier

·       Exercise

·       Gratitude.  [Gratitude can be so powerful.  It thought shifts your outlook to positivity and not what you don’t have]

·       Take time for yourself

What are some other positive daily habits that you will start?  Remember, you are building a roadmap to success and only you can get yourself there.

Start now

No excuses. It's time for change. You have to be the one to make this happen. No matter what, you are in charge of your own destiny, and it is up to you to take responsibility. This starts with taking some time out of each day for yourself, staying active and not letting excuses get in your way.

Admit and learn from your mistakes

We all make mistakes.  There is no doubt about that.  But you can ask yourself, what is the gift of this situation.  There is always a lesson we can learn from our mistakes. If you admit and learn from your mistakes, it will help to develop your accountability and growth mindset. Even if someone else was at fault, do not blame them; instead work with them to find out what caused the mistake so that the outcome will be better next time.

We aren’t doomed because we make mistakes.  They are just a chance to get better.

What is better than improving from our mistakes?  Improving from other people’s mistakes.  Take that action, take responsibility, to learn from other people’s mistakes so that you do not make them yourself and you can possibly keep them from happening again.

Persevere

Things don't always go our way.  The important thing is to not quit and keep moving forward in a positive direction.  Taking responsibility lets you choose how you are going to respond to all of life’s challenges.  Sticking to the responsible mindset allows you accept that you are not just reacting to life, you have the ability and the plan of how you respond to these challenges.  You are in the driver’s seat with a roadmap of where you want to go.  You also have the foundation of positive daily habits and the wisdom to better handle these challenges.  Persevering will give you the confidence to see setbacks and hardships as gifts and opportunities.

Surround yourself with positive people

A huge part of taking responsibility is internal, but humans are social creatures.  Who you become is influenced heavily by who you spend a lot of time with.  Make that a positive.  It is a responsibility of yours to add positive people to your life.  You want to be surrounded by people that encourage you.

Positive people tend to make us happier.  Choose to surround yourself with those that add positivity to your life.  Nobody wants to hang out with someone who is always blaming and complaining.

Change your mindset

When you are not responsible for your life, things happen TO you.  When you are responsible, things happen FOR you.  Think about that for a second.  Being responsible puts you in control. You go from being a victim to victory.

Bad things are going to happen.  With a responsible mindset, you have the foundation, positivity, encouragement and perseverance to power your way to success on your own terms.

Taking Action

This post is all about giving you useful information.  Info is great but it doesn’t help you that much if you don’t do anything with it.  You have the opportunity to take action right now.  Why not solve some of your problems right now?
